Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST)

The Path to Stability

Opioid Substitution Therapy is a medically supervised program designed for individuals struggling with opioid dependence (such as heroin or prescription painkillers). Instead of the "chasing the high" cycle that often leads to risky injection practices, OST provides a legal, long-acting medication (like Buprenorphine or Methadone) under professional care.

Why OST works:

Ends the "High-Low" Cycle: It eliminates the physical cravings and painful withdrawal symptoms without producing the "rush" associated with illicit drugs.
Reduces HIV & Hepatitis C Risk: By providing an oral alternative to injection, we significantly lower the chances of needle-sharing and blood-borne infections.
Restores Social Functioning: When someone isn't spending 24/7 seeking their next dose, they can return to work, rebuild family ties, and focus on long-term recovery.
Key Note: OST is not "replacing one drug with another." It is a medical bridge that stabilizes brain chemistry, allowing the person to engage in counseling and social reintegration.
